Letter to Guangdong Government by 14 HK NGOs: Please confirm the legitimate work of NGOs and support their continued development
2014-11-11
Last July, the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee approved the Decision on Strengthening Social Construction, which states that, as of 1 July this year, civil society groups in Guangdong can register directly with the Department of Civil Affairs. This lowering of the registration threshold was considered by many to be an innovative reform. However, over the last few months, many Shenzhen-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs) helping to defend workers’ rights have come under pressure and were forced to close down. These organizations have consistently provided migrant workers with legal assistance, education, training and social services. They act as a voice for and defender of the long over-looked rights and interests of migrant workers.
Concerning the recent crack down of seven NGOs in Shenzhen and Dongguan since July, 14 Hong Kong labour groups jointly co signed a letter to urge Guangdong government to halt the suppression of these NGOs and acknowledge their legitimate work.
