This research investigates the status of social protection, particularly maternity protection, among agrifood sector workers in Southeast Asia. The agrifood sector encompasses the entire value chain from farm to table, playing a vital role in the region's economies, contributing significantly to GDP and employment. Despite its importance, women in the agrifood sector face various challenges, including lower wages, limited access to resources, and a higher likelihood of informal and precarious employment.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, women in the agrifood sector were disproportionately affected, highlighting the urgent need for social protection measures. Maternity protection is crucial for achieving gender equality, yet many women in the sector lack access to such benefits, primarily due to the prevalence of informal employment.
The objective of this research is to examine the extent to which female workers have been able to access maternity protection benefits, including maternity leave, cash and medical benefits, health protection at the workplace, employment protection, and breastfeeding arrangements. By identifying gaps in coverage and access, this study aims to inform policies that promote gender equality and improve social protection for women in the agrifood sector.
